Giuliana Rosso
(Chivasso, 1992)
Bio / CV / Artworks
Giuliana Rosso (b.1992, Chivasso) lives and works in Turin, Italy.
Her research delves into the realms of painting and drawing, infused with three-dimensional interplays. The artist's aim is to explore interiority, delving into the shadows and the obscure recesses of consciousness, where elements of both substance and absurdity converge to give rise to unconventional realities. Her inquiry into pictorial expression is not overt but rather shrouded, presenting itself as a cryptic narrative woven with implications and allusions.
Within our symbolic universe, she introduces moments suspended between present actuality and future potentiality. These moments often evoke themes found in mottos, proverbs, fairy tales, and premonitions, drawing from a collective imagination populated by spirits and ancient fears. At times, they embody hypnagogic states, offering an alternative reality to conscious existence or fragments of mundane life.
The characters depicted in her work frequently embody adolescence, characterized by a physical and emotional transition marked by desires, anxieties, solitude, and unbridled anger. Whether observing adults or navigating their own experiences, they exhibit attitudes reflective of this stage of life. Their relationship with the environment is often skewed or paradoxical, as fears materialize, imaginary beings manifest, and they surrender to moments of illusion, paralysis, or destruction. Childhood and adolescence serve as potent metaphors, expressing a human condition steeped in perpetual anxiety and conflicting emotions.
Giuliana's artistic mediums primarily include canvas and paper, with occasional forays into clay and papier-mâché sculpture, always seeking a close connection between her creations and the tangible space they inhabit. Through her art, space undergoes transformation, evolving into a realm where enigmatic events materialize within its most enigmatic junctures.

"Pittura Italiana Oggi is a large group exhibition dedicated to contemporary Italian painting through the work of 120 of the most interesting Italian artists of different generations, born between 1960 and 2000. The exhibition aims to restore the richness and complexity of Italian painting. Taking up the suggestions of the historic gallery of mural painting of Triennale Milano, special commissions of site-specific mural works are planned, which will bring the medium of painting to measure itself with the theme of space and architecture."

Bored Bones
at The Address, May 27 – September 16, 2023
"The Address is pleased to present Bored Bones, Giuliana Rosso's first solo exhibition at the gallery, curated by Treti Galaxie.
Weightless figures float beyond the thick door of a vault. In a path of lairs and tunnels, we are invited to traverse phase transitions, and water that does not wet and fire that does not heat. Comet-like eyebrows, dreams that become reality, realities that awaken in a dream.
Proposing techniques and materials dear to Rosso's research, such as charcoal on spolvero paper, papier-mâché and oil on canvas, Bored Bones is composed of new environmental installations, sculptures and paintings poised between reality and imagination, consistency and allusion, gravity and lightness.
The exhibition is structured as a montage of several possible solo shows by the artist, connected by recurring elements and submerged plots, episodes of a web series suggested and condensed within the gallery rooms.
Populated by subjects portrayed in situations of quiet uncertainty and transience, Bored Bones is configured as a place open to individual discovery, an invitation to recover, activate and nurture the sense of adventure and wonder that endearingly cradled the runs on our bright May afternoons."

Noble Experiment,
at Massimo, Milan, June 06 – July 21, 2022
"Noble Experiment is a solo exhibition by Giuliana Rosso which transforms MASSIMO into a dungeon infested by the characters that inhabit the artist's works, characterized by an imaginary acid tint and atmosphere tinged with dreamlike adolescent restlessness..."
Giuliana Rosso’s research moves between painting and drawing, with sculptural and installation contaminations. With "Noble Experiment" the artist includes, within his installations, marginal architectural elements, such as niches, pipes and corners, making them central in the process of transforming the exhibition into a site-specific intervention.
To welcome the viewer is “Daylight is nobody’s friend” (2022), a figure painted on papier-mâché, dangling from one of the tubes that cross MASSIMO. His hallucinatory gaze represents the first glimpse of a space that for the occasion becomes a cave, den, basement, "place of terror and wonder”.
“Torna a casa adesso” (2022) is the second major work and stands out against the white of the front wall of the space. Using chalk and charcoal on paper, the artist captured the moment when a girl is grabbed by mysterious hands and dragged away after a fall with skates. The painting borders on a wall painting that simulates, as in a trompe-l'œil, a gap in the side wall and leads us, with the girl, inside a virtual elsewhere that exists parallel to the physical space: the imaginary dimension to which the characters belong. The exhibition ends with “Cometa bonsai” (2022) and “Coniglio siderale” (2022), medium-sized works that occupy respectively the large central tube and a side niche.
One of the strongest aspects of Giuliana Rosso’s artistic research is her ability to transfigure the volatile matter of paper in a figurative world dotted with acid shades and restless figures, where every single detail comes to life. A rectangle of paper takes the form of a piece of wood, a pink patch turns into a long root that invades the space and joins an expressive trait that enchants the observer.

Expanded Painting

"The news is that, after having been allegedly apart for years, painting and sculpture are at last starting to work together. Painting, which has long occupied the flat surfaces of museums, Kunsthalle, Foundations, and galleries, now wishes to expand its horizons and invade the exhibition space. The canvas can no longer contain the force of a painting that wants to break free, escape from its predefined boundaries and transcend the limitations of its two-dimensional nature..."

Soltanto ora, perdute, mi diventano vere
at Spazio Veda, Florence, June 29, 2019 – September 10, 2019
"Treti Galaxie, hosted by VEDA, is proud to present the solo show of Giuliana Rosso: Soltanto ora, perdute, mi diventano vere.
Through a painting style made with fragile materials such as spolvero paper, chalks, charcoal and papier-mâché, Giuliana Rosso creates a composite installation that celebrates the fragility of the individual through a contemporary reinterpretation of universal themes related to art history and popular culture.
In the show, a painted and flipped over vault takes the place of the gallery floor, collapsed during the 1966 flood of the Arno. The intervention looks like the image of an ideal frescoed ceiling reflected on the surface of the water that once flooded the space. The overturning also affects the subject of the painting, which concerns a particular interpretation of the Assumption."

"Dripping in Crocodile Tears is a group exhibition curated by Roberta Mansueto, featuring works by Tania Fiaccadori, Valentina Furian, Rada Kozelj, Plasticity, Giuliana Rosso and Giulio Scalisi.
Inspired by various biological theories, Dripping in Crocodile Tears narrates a story of biological and cultural evolution, beginning with the analysis of tears as a unique characteristic of Homo sapiens. Humans are the only animals that express emotions through weeping, a biological mystery that remains unresolved. This phenomenon fuels a liquid imagery that comes to life in our bodies of water, flows into other organisms, and permeates dream matter and the collective unconscious, shaping the actions of modern humans."
